The Sound of Mutech

Posted on April 7, 2011 by Jake Brennan

An update on the Mutech Records project…
We’ve so far decided on a name, venue, date, logo, poster design, CD cover design marketing strategy, and probably other things too. We’re going to be putting on our launch evening on the 19th May at the college run Upper Brown Street Theatre (Where the Phoenix Arts used to be).
Here is a design for the actual CD.

As you can see, the CD is going to be called The Sound Of Mutech and is featuring The Tall Orders, Room 300, Even More Than You, Sunset Number 7, Megan Jones and the Joe and Ashes to the Fall. Give a opinion about which one we should choose! Thank you!
I also pretty much finished mixing one of the Room 300 songs that is going on the CD, I shall upload it with their permission sometime next week!
Ciao for now!

Logos!

Posted on March 15, 2011 by Jake Brennan

I’ve been designing. I say designing, I really mean I spent a few hours mucking around on Adobe Illustrator and I came up with these two new designs for the Mutech record label project. I also fixed the first design. If you look closely at about the middle of the horn, you’ll see I didn’t line it up properly and so it doesn’t look right. That’s what’s been fixed. That small insignificant detail. Have a look below! :)
The amended first logo.
The second Logo. The semi circles took some time to make look right and I’m not sure if This idea has been done before. The semi circles are sort of supposed to represent music being broadcast from the ‘T’ since it is fairly central and looks the most like a broadcast tower.
EDIT: We had a bit of a talk about these designs in class and so I produced two adaptations. Here is the more popular of the two.

What We’re up to at College Nowadays…

Posted on March 9, 2011 by Jake Brennan
At college we have a unit called Creating and Marketing a Musical Product which incorporates exactly what the title implies. We record/mix/master a CD and then we actually go ahead and launch it because why not? That’s what usually happens.
The entire class sat down during a lesson a few weeks ago and unanimously decided to take on the task of marketing and releasing said CD as a group rather than doing it individually. We’re basically forming a record label to release and market the CD through. We’re also putting on a launch gig through this label.
We naturally assigned ourselves roles such as manager, marketing, artwork, banker etc to bring some order to the whole project. I volunteered along with Peter Collins (Everyone’s favourite Aryan) to do the logo designs and artwork. So far Pete has been experimenting with Photoshop and has produced a pretty neat poster (see his blog here)  and I myself have produced a potential logo. See what you think!
The name Mutech comes from mashing the course title (Music Technology) together. This was only a name I came up with just to show how the text would be however people liked it and now it’s the label’s name!

Leicester College Launch Event

This ones a double post as I began writing a brief post a day after my last and saved it. So here you go, I have dated them both as to show the chronology

8/3/2010
So there have been a few changes since my last post. Most notably more new designs and developments on the logo front which I will go into later on in this post.
When posting the cover rough design in the last post, I noticed that on the top banner, the drop shadow was crazy big and taking up most of the one beneath it. However the original size banner, this was hardly noticeable. So since then I have worked on getting rid of this and having two files for when I’m done.
One of these files will be the original size as this won’t affect poster due to the drop shadow fitting in with the rest of the design in terms of the design. But when it comes down to flyer I shall do a smaller version and alter the drop shadow and other editing accordingly in order to avoid some crazy differences between the format its being produced in.
Since my post I spoke to jake who had came up with a few logo designs. Some pretty interesting designs, one of them he shown me being the one below. Again, we are still without a name but I think the one he’s used is quite decent, we’ll just have to see what happens with the rest of the group.

Since the last time I wrote anything, I have made significant progress with my work on the poster. Improving on the faults noticed by myself as well as taking in criticism, fortunately there wasn’t much criticism at all so I have done well really.
Here above is the current state of the poster, I did a few variations on the original design shown last week, experimenting with fonts and altering the size of the banners. The latter is something I have used for this design as I felt they were too thick and took up way too much room. I have also made room by making the Loros logo smaller
I’ve made quite a few adjustments really, removed the horrified looking woman from the Loros logo as it could give out the wrong idea about the charity for any passers by who see it. The idea behind her is that she’s looking up at the guitars floating in the sky as if its some sort of invasion. I am also going to include some keyboards and possibly microphones to accompany them. However this could end up looking quite messy so I may reduce the number of guitars already on there.
Other things I plan to work on now, is the colour scheme of the banners, it has come to mine and a few others who gave their opinion that it looks quite dark with the text so my next task would be to try and brighten them up. I’m also still experimenting with fonts. I quite like the one I used “Rosewood Std” which is the font that is on mostly used with “Brush script std” used as an experiment. While I like Rosewood, it does blend in with the banners a bit too much so I will see about making the red lighter.
Meanwhile…
Another exciting development as you can see is that we now have a name for the label. We went with Jake’s idea of MuTech Records which was instantly welcomed. Jake, as you may know, is working with me on this side of the event. Jakes role being the logo design. You can check his progress out here
Also in other news. While there was one of two people quite determined on the idea, we have decided against printing any flyers off in a majority vote, this is due to the risk of any being left lying around on the floor outside of college, the council will get involved and possibly be fined.
The date for the is still undecided, we currently have gone with using Upper Brown Street for our venue too. However given that its a college owned building we have to offer it to any other student on other courses if they have any proposals as such for the night, although we will have the majority of power over any decisions (I hope).
We also have a timeline set up on our colleges moodle, with deadlines for certain events to be done. One of the closest being the poster design, so I better stop writing this blog and finish this rapscallion.  Once its done we aim to have the posters up in every Loros shop in Leicester, thats 22 shops! Its quite a strange thought having my design up in all of them but exciting nonetheless
So for now I bid you all goodbye.

Leicester College Launch Event

So at the moment I am doing a course in Music Technology at Leicester College. Part of the criteria of one particular assignment requires the entire group to work together to conduct a launch event for  CD we are doing for a recording unit.
For the event there will be all kinds of things going on, with the main focus on it being a live event but there are ideas floating around of all kinds of things such potential cake sale, raffle etc Its still all being discussed currently
As part of the launch event, we are planning all kinds of roles, from management to promotion to art and logo design. Its a lot of work between us but will be very satisfying if all goes to plan (If… IF!!) and is currently very exciting.
So you may be wondering why are you talking about this? Whats this got to do with anything? Why are you pretending people read this when its pretty much your first post?
Well, this is also a part of the assignment where I’ll be talking about my role of logo and poster design, a shared role with class mate Jake Brennan (Pronounced ya-hee bree-nan). A creative role and there is a lot of pressure what with our designs not only have to satisfy ourselves but everyone on the team and will eventually be used to promote the event on walls, flyers, social networking websites and possibly even magazines depending on how far promotion goes (Dave and Eleni).
At the moment, we currently don’t have a name and thus the logo can’t really be designed as of yet. However I have done a rough design for the poster. Me and another class mate thought the old Communist propaganda posters may look cool and found a tutorial on how to create one which I have followed/took inspiration on. I’m not the best at photoshop so this helped quite a bit in terms of learning new techniques which will help down the line.
Here is a rough, first design of the poster which is currently unfinished. I came up with it in about an hour in the early hours of the morning and was too tired to continue.
The only problems I have had so far is that I am doing the poster in such a high resolution that any pictures I find to import are simply not big enough.  As you can see the woman above the Loros sign I hoped to be a lot bigger and to the side looking up and above would be guitars and keyboards and other instruments as if to look like some sort of invasion flying over the top of people.
Also, you may notice “EQbacca Presents” this is not and never will be the name (unfortunately) as the majority disliked it. I only put that on the poster as we didn’t have a name and it would give the class an idea of what it would look like. The font will not be the same either on the finished piece.
As you can also see (And neglected to mention earlier) is that there is a a logo of a charity on the poster. For this event we have collectively decided that any profits shall go to charity. We toyed with the idea of many different charities such as Music Youth and Love, Hope, Strength. But in the end we went with Loros due to it being  a local charity and since decided have been contacted and up for supporting us and helping promote the event.
All in all, I’m currently enjoying this position and have high hopes for the event and the designs that me and Jake come out with. While the stress is yet to set in, if at all, I’m sure it will be rewarding in the end.
